Riley, My BFF (Best Furry Friend)

For those of us that have had the of who gives unconditional love, I would like to share my story.
Thirteen years ago my daughter’s girlfriend, Jen, came over to our house with a beautiful 1 1/2 year old named Riley. I had just lost our first of only 4 years due to cancer and did not want to go through the pain of loss again, but told her I’d keep her until Jen decided whether she could keep her, or not. As it ended up Riley and I fell in love and she stayed.
Over the years she shared her love with who loved to rub her belly and see her ‘dance’ for treats. She would stand on the back porch and do her job of letting anyone who walked by that she was our protector.  I felt very safe having her.

When the started arriving nine years ago she was so patient, never once did I get nervous with her.  Whenever it got hectic I’d find her hiding in the corner of the bedroom away from rambunctious little ones.   I watched her age as I do my and could see that she was slowing down as they were running on high speed.  There is no doubt in my mind she knew they were coming and they’d be asking if they could give her a treat.  With arthritis in the hips, loss of her hearing and old age she’d be waiting at the door for them.

On here last day with me everything was normal – she gave me her wake up call at around 6:30, went out in the yard, came in for her breakfast.  I knew I’d have to give her about one-half hour and then out again she’d go.  I went and got ready for work and that is when I found her.  She was at the back door and could not get up – I knew.  She weighed 92 lbs so Bill got the neighbor and put her in the car.  I was beside my self because I knew she wasn’t coming home.  I miss her!
